Tom Dixon’s eponymous brand was created in 2002, with a mission to design, illuminate and furnish the future with innovative lighting, furniture and accessories of longevity, simplicity and materiality inspired by Britain’s unique heritage. His obsession with materiality, manufacturing and form begun in 1975 during his pottery A levels and life drawing classes. After a lesson in welding, Tom quickly applied the manufacturing technique to transform scrap metal into a range of semi-functional objects.
In 1987, a doodle of a chicken took Dixon from self-production into the Italian luxury goods industry. After several mutations, the doodle was transformed into the iconic S-chair; a unique sculptural seat that achieved a place in the permanent collection in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. In 1992 a shop was opened in London’s Notting Hill to provide a selling platform for fresh designs. Objects from Droog, Inflate and Michael Young were sold alongside Tom’s own design creations. In 2002, he was awarded with an O.B.E for services to design at Buckingham Palace.
Inspired by the nation’s unique heritage, the brand has a commitment to innovation and a mission to revive the British furniture industry. Tom Dixon’s extraordinary collection of lighting includes eye-catching pendant ceiling lights and the iconic Melt Light, each effortlessly illuminating a setting in luxury style. Whilst scented candles inspired by form and material create the ultimate in relaxation. Using copper detailing and unique shapes, Tom Dixon translates his renowned style into a range of furniture, vases and accessories each are revolutionary yet remain suitable for everyday use.
Born in Tunisia, Tom Dixon moved to England in 1963. He dropped out of the Chelsea School of Art to play bass in the band “Funkapolitan” before teaching himself how to design furniture. By the late 1980s he was working for the Italian furniture giant Cappellini for whom he designed the iconic ‘S’ chair. Tom Dixon’s works have been acquired by some of the world’s most prestigious museums and are now in permanent collections across the globe including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Museums of Modern Art New York and Centre Beaubourg (Pompidou).
